4 thumbs up...
You can hear the kids screaming with pillows of cotton candy and the excitement begins to build as you achieve greatness with a parking spot in tolerable walking distance of the boardwalk. The signs that you remember when you were a kid, almost call your name until you remember that shooting a clown for a dollar is now three dollars and the grand prize is a stuffed south park character.
More importantly let's talk food... after a 40 min ride to the "shore" for an all on Food Fest, we decide to Schmorg at Martell's.
I gotta hand it to the guy at the shrimp bar. There is no doubt in my mind that that guy started boiling his gumbo before the last board was laid down on Jenkinson's Pier and to me that means consistent delish.
Here is what we found delicious today:
Garlic Shrimp Platter, a must perfect combination of tomatoes, garlic and shrimp over el dente rice that that drank the garlic sauce with elegance.
Shrimp gumbo, excellent. Never let it cool down........ the OKRA, the Onion, the peppers, the brightly colored shrimp chunks that had the perfect crunch.
Roasted Oysters, with a key lime cipotle butter sauce..... Phenom, rich, delicious and Great.
Clams casino. This was the first clam casino that I met that was almost more part pig than clam and I loved every bit of it. This was not your regular, all breaded clam shell with a clam hidden somewhere. It was a tender treasure in what I like to call surf and turf in a shell.
We experimented with the tropical raw oysters at the TIKI bar, had to hang on the pier for ambience, but sadly the mango overpowered the freshness of the actual oyster. Worth and exotic try. You live and learn.
Top This tour de boardwalk with a sausage parm sandwich with marinara on the side. A boardwalk classic. The onions and peppers are perfectly in the middle of tender and fresh crunch. And the marinara hits the spot. Cant leave the wooden road with out a taste of the sausage and peppers or the cheese steak, we made the right choice with the classic sausage and peps.
Debated over the Khors custard cone and went with straight up ice cream. Four thumbs up to the decadent nutter butter and the Blueberry cobbler ice creams. . . Ode to the fruit of the summer in a farewell cone.
Cooled off with fresh squeezed OJ from the tiki bar, and old favorite. And tried to burn off the cals with some arcade hoops and ski ball.
All and All three and a half thumbs! Do not forget the zeps, powdered sugar goodness, not as crispy as I would like. but its all about the game of chance on the Point Pleasant Boardwalk.
